American Airlines announced it will be adding a second daily flight between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Hermosillo International Airport in Hermosillo, Mexico.
“Phoenix is an important hub for the American Airlines’ network. This addition to Hermosillo, Mexico is a result of the strength we’ve seen, particularly in the Mexico trans-border market. We are continually evaluating opportunities to grow our presence in the Valley of the Sun,” American Airlines spokesperson Kelsey Gion said.
“Adding a second daily flight between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Hermosillo, Mexico increases nonstop options for passengers, making this a significant cross-border trade, investment and leisure travel stop for both cities. American Airlines’ expansion underscores their commitment to meet our customers’ travel needs,” City of Phoenix Councilwoman Thelda Williams, District 1, said.
The new flight operated by SkyWest will be served by a Bombardier CRJ-700 and will contain 70 seats, American said.
According to American, the extra flight is expected to provide an economic boost to both Arizona and Mexico.
“With a strong trade and tourism partnership, the flight will provide a vital connection between the two cities. In fact, the economic impact of international flights on the local community is more than $3 billion dollars,” the airline said in a statement.
Over the last 12 months, Arizona has exported $22 billion in goods and products, more than half of which went to Mexico.
“Additional flight service between Phoenix and Hermosillo makes economic sense for both American Airlines and Phoenix. The states of Arizona and Sonora, where Hermosillo is located, are major trade partners and additional airline services will continue to strengthen this powerful trade and tourism partnership,” Phoenix Councilwoman Betty Guardado, District 5, said.
“American’s newest flight to Hermosillo from Phoenix will not only serve an important part of our daily commerce with Mexico but will also provide another flight option for Arizona residents who travel there frequently,” Councilman Michael Nowakowski, District 7, said.
The inaugural flight will be on December 18, 2019, leaving Hermosillo at 9 a.m. and arriving in Phoenix at 10:19 a.m. The flight will then depart Phoenix at 7:14 p.m. and arrive in Hermosillo at 8:43 p.m.
