Phoenix Children’s Hospital earns a top children’s hospital award

Phoenix Children’s Hospital was named one of the nation’s Top Children’s Hospitals by the Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization.

This is the fourth year in which the hospital has received the award.

“Receiving the Leapfrog Award for the fourth time validates that Phoenix Children’s remains a leader in pediatric health here at home in Arizona and across the country,” said Jodi Carter, MD, Chief Clinical Integration Officer at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “We’re so proud to say we ranked over 40 points above the national average in pediatrics and 40 plus points higher than the state average in our overall value score. This distinction recognizes our talented staff, and encourages Phoenix Children’s continued, measurable improvement and investment made in pediatric care, medication safety, inpatient care management, and infection rates –among other areas.”

The award follows the hospital receiving an “A” Hospital Safety Grade, also from the Leapfrog Group.

Phoenix Children’s was recognized among 13 top children’s hospitals; 35 top general hospitals; 17 top rural hospitals; and 53 top teaching hospitals.

“Being acknowledged as a Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than six percent of eligible hospitals nationwide,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in the statement. “With this honor, Phoenix Children’s has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care. Providing this level of care to patients in Phoenix requires motivation and drive from every team member. I congratulate the board, staff and clinicians, whose efforts made this honor possible.”

The Leapfrog Group examines a hospital’s performance across a variety of hospital care areas including infection rates, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. All of which the group defines in its ‘Top Hospital Methodology.’

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is considered one of the most competitive honors an American hospital can receive.

In order to qualify for the award, hospitals submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey and “achieve highest performance in its category.” In 2018, there were surveys from roughly 1,900 hospitals.
