Arizona leaders recognized for business policy support

Arizona Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally and six other members of Congress were awarded the Spirit of Enterprise Award by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The Spirit of Enterprise Award recognizes members of Congress who support pro-growth policies and critical business legislation.

“It’s always important to recognize folks who are doing the right thing and to express thanks when they do it. Obviously, members of Congress and elected officials in general don’t hear enough thanks probably when they make the right vote or do the right thing,” said Jennings Imel, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Western Region executive director.

A member of Congress must vote with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on issues it determines as a priority 70 percent of the time to receive the Spirit of Enterprise Award.

He said, “It’s always nice to recognize them and reward them for standing up in support of business, in support of pro-job pro-growth policies. That’s something that we make a point to do every single year.”

Throughout her time in Congress, Sen. Sinema has voted with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce 76 percent of the time.

“I’m honored to receive the Spirit of Enterprise award, and I’ll keep working across the aisle to cut red tape, fuel innovation, and create opportunity for Arizonans,” Sen. Sinema said in a press release.

Imel said, “We’re looking for people that are going to work with the other side of the aisle and are going to put policy above politics.”

Congressman David Schweikert also received the Spirit of Enterprise Award as he voted with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce 75 percent of the time this year.

“I am pleased to receive the Spirit of Enterprise Award this year. We must continue to craft policy that expands our economy to be competitive and creates economic success for workers and families. Thank you to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for extending this award,” Congressman Schweikert said.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of setting differences aside and coming together to support policy that helps business.

“Really something that I think is a cornerstone of the Spirit of Enterprise and what that means really has to do with working in a bipartisan fashion, working across the aisle to get things done,” Imel said.

He added, “We always talk about the governing middle, the governing center- that’s where big things happen, big things get done, where Republicans and Democrats are able to come to the middle and pass legislation that is to the benefit of the business community.”

Along with the Senators, the following members of Congress in Arizona also received the award:

Rep. Jeff Flake, former Senator
Rep. Jon Kyl, former Senator
Rep. Tom O’Halleran
Rep. Paul Gosar
Rep. Andy Biggs
Rep. David Schweikert
